Fundación Valenciaport will reinforce port cybersecurity with the Athena project. The initiative will offer software and hardware providers a flexible and scalable solution that will allow them to test, validate, and guarantee compliance with the new European Union (EU) security requirements, ensuring that products are ready for certification according to the relevant regulations.

“Furthermore, Athena will include a tool that will ensure the reliability of new products from the initial phases of their development, guaranteeing their conformity not only with the essential requirements established in the EU harmonized legislation—including, for example, the CRA, the NIS2 Directive, and the Data Act—, but also with the specific security needs of the different stakeholder groups,” the entity communicated.

“The project contemplates the integration of innovative services based on Artificial Intelligence and an advanced set of automatic tools intended for the detection and assessment of vulnerabilities. These solutions will allow for a continuous evaluation of the security level and active protection against complex cyber threats,” it added.

In this context, the Fundación Valenciaport will validate the solutions in a port environment and verify regulatory compliance in key port control and surveillance systems. The initiative, led by CiberTRS, has a budget of more than 5 million euros, co-financed by the Horizon Europe project of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (Cinea).

Besides CiberTRS and Fundación Valenciaport, 10 other European entities participate in Athena: Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, CyberSocial Lab, ETRA, ITTI, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, Favit, Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements, South Engineering and Catone Logistica.
