MPCC adds $232m quartet of boxship newbuilds

Must read

MPC Container Ships has moved again to refresh its fleet, signing up for four 4,500-teu newbuildings in China backed by long-term employment.

The Oslo-listed tonnage provider confirmed it has struck a deal with Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry for the quartet, with deliveries set to begin in the first half of 2028. Each ship carries a price tag of $58m, and MPCC has secured options for two more at the same level.

All four vessels will trade on 10-year time charters—with extension options—with what the company described as a leading global liner operator. MPCC said the design and commercial terms were shaped jointly with the charterer to match network needs, operating patterns and long-term efficiency targets. The initial charter period is projected to generate about $375m in revenue and roughly $242m in EBITDA.

MPCC said the ships will be fitted with energy-saving technologies that cut slot costs by around 50% compared with similar vessels in today’s fleet. The order supports the company’s push toward a younger, more efficient and regulation-ready portfolio, reducing exposure to future environmental rules.

Financing will come from a mix of equity and debt, which the company said keeps its balance sheet in line with its capital strategy.

“Our fleet renewal strategy continues to gain momentum with this latest initiative,” said CEO Constantin Baack, adding: “With today’s announcement, MPCC has secured 10 newbuildings with attached charters this year, underscoring our ability to deliver value-accretive deals with top-tier partners and strengthen strategic customer relationships.”

The move extends a busy ordering year for MPCC. It follows a similar July deal for four 4,500-teu ships at around $57m apiece and an October order for two 1,600-teu vessels priced at $33m each.
