Ericsson, world leaders in digital communication software, has unveiled a new Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) on an end-to-end, standalone 5G network as part of a collaboration with China Mobile.
According to a statement, the prototype was demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Shanghai in June and proved that a standalone 5G architecture can be adequately used for industry digitalization.
The AGVs will have a network slicing-based Dedicated Industrial Network technology, which will help create dedicated industrial networks to ensure the security and reliability of production data.
Furthermore, they can also be used to leverage the powerful computing capability of edge clouds to make in-depth analysis of test data to improve efficiency and integrate information from other manufacturing systems.

Another benefit, according to Ericsson, is that the AGV applications can be deployed on edge clouds, as well as meet the requirement for low latency and ensure effective management of industrial applications.

In addition, this also helps to reduce the complexity of AGV equipment and improve the operating stability of the entire system.
Lu Lu, Deputy Director of the Networks and IT, China Mobile Research (CMRI), said: “Edge computing and network slicing are the most important enabling technologies for 5G.
“They also provide important capabilities that operators need to serve vertical industries. Teaming up with Ericsson, we demonstrate the strong potential of edge computing and network slicing for the Industrial Internet, and this is a valuable experiment for industrial applications of 5G.”
Zhang Guangshuo, Deputy General Manager of Core Network Products at Ericsson North East Asia, hailed the relationship between Ericsson and China Mobile: As a strategic partner, Ericsson has been working closely with China Mobile to drive the development of the Industrial Internet through 5G, aiming to help in making digital transformation a reality.”
