An agreement between the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, the Liguria Region, and the Regional Agency for the Environmental Protection of Liguria (Arpal) was signed with the aim of controlling the air quality in the ports of Genoa and Savona.
The idea is to guarantee monitoring and obtain an increasingly precise knowledge of the environmental conditions in the areas adjacent to the port facilities, also through the exchange of data on emissions and the development of modeling techniques capable of simulating the atmospheric impact of the industry’s activities on the cities.
Matteo Paroli, president of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, commented that “the signing of the agreement constitutes a strategic step within the program of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, which aims to integrate the development of infrastructures, environmental sustainability and the protection of the quality of life in the port and peri-port areas.”
“The initiative seeks to guarantee continuous, systematic, and scientifically validated monitoring of the air quality in the areas adjacent to the ports of the system, in order to obtain an updated overview of the effects of port activities and to objectively identify the most effective mitigation and improvement measures,” added Paroli.
The head of the entity explained that “the collaboration with the Liguria Region and Arpal consolidates an operational model based on the exchange and interoperability of environmental data, the application of certified analytical protocols, and the use of advanced atmospheric modeling tools capable of reproducing emission scenarios, simulating the dispersion of pollutants, and predicting their impact on the territory.”
“This integrated approach supports strategic port planning through reliable environmental indicators, facilitating informed decision-making,” said the president of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority.
