The saga of the ferry Moby Drea appears to be heading towards a positive conclusion for the owner company Med Fuel. For several months, the ferry had been seeking a port that could carry out the work to remove panels containing asbestos from inside the cabins of the ferry Drea (ex Moby Drea).
The Port Authority governing the port of Taranto has indeed granted its approval, together with the local Harbour Master’s Office, for the use of the commercial quay of Calata IV to perform this remediation work, which has been entrusted to the company Ecologica Spa, specialized in this type of operation. The ship is already at the quay in question because it has been moored there ever since sea weather conditions forced the ferry to seek shelter in the port, avoiding the risk of the towline to which it was connected snapping while it was stationed off the Apulian port.
The owner of the company Med Fuel, Davide Prestopino, confirmed to SHIPPING ITALY the availability expressed by the Ionian Sea Port System Authority to carry out the work in Taranto, specifying that “the company Ecologica Spa has been tasked with drafting the work plan to be submitted to Spesal for approval. The duration of the work is expected to be about 90 days and the start could be in about a month. This is the time needed to finalize the work plan and await authorization from Spesal” (Servizio Prevenzione e Sicurezza Negli Ambienti di Lavoro – Prevention and Safety Service in the Workplace).
The panels containing asbestos will be stored, packaged, and sealed, and then loaded directly from the ship onto vehicles bound for a specialized disposal center in Basilicata where they will be definitively treated at a specialized site.
