Semiramis Paliou (HELMEPA): “We all share the same mission and belief that we can save the seas”
HELMEPA is to receive a special certification at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Awards 2022
The gala dinner at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference, Awards & Exhibition 2022 in Athens 9 November 2022 will witness the presentation of a special certification to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA).
HELMEPA was founded in 1982 when Greek shipowners and seafarers joined forces in a collective desire and commitment to pass on to future generations a clean and healthy marine environment. This was at a time when lifestyles and concerns about the environment were very different from today.
HELMEPA chairperson Semiramis Paliou said, “HELMEPA proves to be resilient and adaptable, with fast reflexes to meet the challenges and needs of our time. Our strongest points are the pioneering DNA and of course the people who have shaped us. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers, youth and adults, from Greece and abroad, the shipping community and beyond, the media that help us spread our message, we all share the same mission and belief that we can save the seas”.
HELMEPA has undertaken initiatives including mapping best practices, promoting the exchange of knowledge and know-how on the green and digital transition of shipping, implementing awareness-raising campaigns on marine environmental protection, climate change and maritime safety.
The organisation has also been strengthening the interconnection between the academic community and the shipping industry, advancing the employment prospects in the blue economy for youth through the Blue Generation initiative, and focusing maritime training for the development and strengthening of professional skills.
The overall aim over the last 40 years has been promoting a commitment to Greek shipping, society and the health of the oceans.
