Tankship discharges oil during refuelling on Mississippi River

Tankship Hafnia Rhine (IMO 9341940) was reported to have discharged oil during the early evening of July 28th during a fuelling operation with a fuel barge at Ama Anchorage, mile marker 115 on the lower Mississippi River near Kenner, Louisiana, on July 28, 2022.

US Coast Guard sector New Orleans watchstanders were notified and sent USCG
pollution responders to the scene. The crew of the Hafnia Rhine secured the oil
discharge, but it was estimated by Sector New Orleans pollution investigators that
up to 2,100 gallons of fuel oil entered the water and contaminated between 50 and
60 barges in the vicinity. The National Response Corporation and Environmental
Safety and Health Consulting Services were hired as oil spill removal
organizations. The services placed 2,700ft of containment boom and 3,320ft of
sorbent boom around the affected area, including the contaminated vessels. Sorbents
were also used to recover the oil product.

There have been no reports of impact to wildlife.

2008-built, Singapore-flagged, 43,797 gt Hafnia Rhine is owned by BW Aldrich Pte Ltd care of BW Group Ltd, Hamilton, Bermuda. It is managed by Hafnia Tankers Shipholding Singapore and ISM managed by BW Fleet Management Pte Ltd of Singapore. It is entered with North of England on behalf of BW Aldrich Pte Ltd. As of August 1st it was stopped at New Orleans Port.
