Traffic along the River Rhine, already badly hampered by low water levels, was affected further on Wednesday August 17th after a vessel’s engine failure closed part of the waterway, said the river police.
After suffering engine failure an unnamed vessel with a 1,660-ton load was forced to drop anchor in the waterway, closing traffic between St Goar and Oberwesel. The River Police said that the waterway should be cleared by the end of the day.
Although Rhine water levels have been at near record lows, Rhine shipping authorities said that they expected the situation to improve in the coming days as rain was forecast for the region.
