Provaris expands scope of compressed hydrogen carriers

Must read

Australia-based Provaris Energy (previously GEV) has executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Total Eren, a France-based renewable energy power producer for the development of solutions to transport green hydrogen projects to Asia and Europe.

Provaris is developing a compressed hydrogen storage and transport supply chain.

Total Eren is specialised in the development, financing, construction, operation and maintenance over the long-term of renewable energy power plants (mainly solar and wind) worldwide. In particular, Total Eren is working on several large-scale green hydrogen projects globally, including in Latin America (Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia), in Australia, and in Africa (Morocco, Egypt and Mauritania).

The MoU provides a framework for Provaris and Total Eren to work together on the identification and assessment of green hydrogen projects currently developed by Total Eren that can utilise Provaris’ green hydrogen (GH2) carriers for bulk transport of compressed hydrogen in markets that require imported volumes of pure gaseous green hydrogen.

Provaris says the advantages of compressed hydrogen include that it is commercially viable at low volumes, has a small footprint compared to liquefaction, is the most energy efficient way of transporting green hydrogen and can be loaded via onshore berth facilities or offshore buoy systems.

Provaris has prepared a preliminary engineering design for a GH2 carrier designed for the export and import of compressed hydrogen which it expects to be finalised by mid-2023. Two vessel sizes are being designed, one with 26,000m3 capacity and one with 200,000m3 capacity. Both have been granted Approval in Principle from ABS. The onboard storage tanks will have an operating pressure of 250 bar. Technical partners include Wärtsilä, Ballard Power systems and /NOV.

In Australia, Provaris is advancing with its Tiwi H2 project, which has now been awarded Major Project Status by the Northern Territory Government. Tiwi H2 is an integrated compressed green hydrogen production and export development, located on the Tiwi Islands, producing up to 100,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen for export into the Asia Pacific region. The plan is to use solar energy to produce the hydrogen and Provaris’ proprietary GH2 carriers for shipping.

Martin Carolan, Provaris Managing Director and CEO, commented: “Our discussions with Total Eren over time have identified a strong alignment on the commercial and technical benefits of compression for the storage and transport of hydrogen, and we look forward to a closer relationship to facilitate and accelerate the delivery of the first fleet of GH2 carriers.”
