Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ mtu hybrid propulsion packs will require more than 30 EST-Floattech lithium polymer battery modules
Under a newly agreed framework contract, EST-Floattech will supply its ’Green Orca 1050’-series battery modules as part of Rolls-Royce’s propulsion contract to outfit nine ferries for Italian operator Liberty Lines.
Each of the modules has a 10.5 kWh capacity, with the total outfitting contract for EST-Floattech adding 3,118.5 kWh of power to the propulsion order for the vessels.
Spanish shipyard Armon will build the identical sister ships between April 2023 and April 2024, and the ships are expected to begin operations between 2023 and 2026.
The vessels will sail between the Italian island province of Sicily in the Mediterranean and Croatia in the Adriatic Sea, along with shorter crossings between Italian islands.
According to EST-Floattech, the battery systems are used for cruising speeds of up to 8 knots. In all-electric operation, including entering and leaving port or anchoring and maneuvering operations, the battery propulsion not only produces no emissions and minimises vessel noise.
“The Framework Agreement is a milestone achievement for EST-Floattech Hamburg. Rolls-Royce Power Systems and EST-Floattech will work well together. Both companies are setting milestones on the road to climate-neutral shipping with the approved Series 2000 and Series 4000 mtu marine diesel engines, respectively the approved and DNV-certified Green Orca 1050 batteries”, said EST-Floattech CCO Walter van der Pennen.
EST-Floattech said its company’s framework contract with Rolls-Royce Power Systems allows both companies to contribute to maritime emissions goals.
