General cargo ship Hoa Lu 02 (IMO 9621053) (name
as reported by AIS. Registered name Trang An 02) ran into trouble in the Gulf
of Tonkin, off Nghe Tinh province coast, late on December 4th while en route
from Cam Pha, sailing in southern direction. After the main engine failed the
ship started taking on water. The Captain issued a distress signal and
requested evacuation. An SAR ship was sent to assist and approached the sinking
Hoa Lu 02 in the early hours of December 5th, but rough seas prevented it
getting side on with the troubled vessel. It was decided that the crew should
abandon ship to life rafts, to be picked up from them by the SAR vessel. Three
out of 16 crew stayed on the ship to assist in its salvage. The other 13 crew
were rescued. All are safe. The ship was probably already resting on bottom,
mainly above waterline. Possibly it was intentionally grounded to avoid total
loss.
