Dec 20: I received a Statement on behalf of manager of bulk carrier STERLING FREIA, with regards to fire accident on Dec 15, at Muuga Port.
Statement:
Further to our telecon, please be advised details of fire incident, which happened in Deck Workshop on Poop deck. The compartment is not adjacent to accommodation – see plan attached. Deck crew noticed smoke inside workshop and informed duty officer. The compartment was immediately isolated , and crew activated emergency protocol. It was no open fire, but a lot of smoke. Port fire brigade arrived promptly on scene. Crew did supporting jobs, boundary cooling and Fire brigade took main firefighting. In about twenty minutes the fire squad accessed the Workshop, another 30 minutes takes for ventilation. All adjacent compartments were checked – found in good order. Please see some pictures attached. The Port Fire fighting team left the vessel in 1 hour and 12 minutes after arrival.
No injures to crew or other persons happen. Ship’s Crew and Port Fire brigade acted quickly and professionally. No any delays of vessel’s loading / commercial schedule caused.
All parties: Flag State, Port State, Insurance and Class were informed accordingly as required.
The vessel completed here loading as per schedule on 18.12.2022 at 13:40, completed fumigation of cargo at 19:00 and safely sailed Muuga terminal at 20:00 on same date.
Presently the vessel is underway to her destination port Huelva, ETA 27.12.2022.
The investigation of root cause incident is in progress in accordance with Flag State requirements and ISM Code.
Report emerged on fire, which erupted on board of bulk carrier STERLING FREIA, docked at Muuga Port, Estonia, in the afternoon Dec 15. Fire started in superstructure, it was extinguished in an hour and a half, 5 engines were deployed. Fire was caused by electric shortcut in faulty wiring. Bulk carrier arrived at Muuga on Dec 8, understood to load or offload grain.
