Construction has begun on Maersk’s large methanol vessels

Must read

Construction work on large ocean-going vessels able to sail on green methanol has started in South Korean shipyard. Steel cut milestone was reached this week.

Danish shipping group Maersk takes another big leap on the road to fulfilling climate goals.

This week, construction of the carrier’s ocean-going ships fueled on green methanol has begun at the shipyard in South Korea.

On Wednesday, Maersk posted a video from the opening ceremony on its Twitter account revealing the steel cut milestone.

Maersk has placed orders for a total of 19 container ships able to sail on carbon-neutral e-methanol.

The ships will aide the carrier in fulfilling net-zero emission goals by 2040, having set a far more ambitious course than UN maritime organization IMO, which is aiming to halve emissions by 2050.

With all 19 ships employed on global trade routes, Maersk expects emissions to decrease by 2.3 million tonnes.

The giant 17,000-teu vessels will be built at shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries and are due for delivery in 2025.

Maersk has already begun construction on a minor feeder vessel also enabled to sail on green fuel, which is scheduled for deployment between Scandinavian ports during 2023. The feeder vessel is also being built in South Korea, namely the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

Maersk’s largest challenge is procuring enough fuel for the new vessels. Therefore, the carrier has brokered a string of strategic partnerships to drive the acceleration of global production capacity for green methanol, which is produced via wind or solar energy.
