Weeks after five cargo ships were targeted by missiles, the Russian government will allow dozens of foreign ships stranded in Ukraine to leave a safe corridor.
Chief of Russia’s National Defense Management Center General Mikhail Mizintsev, said on Thursday. “”The Russian Federation creates a humanitarian corridor for the exit of foreign ships from Ukrainian ports into the open sea, which is a safe strip for the movement of ships from the assembly area located 20 miles south-east of [Chornomorsk] port.”
If the corridor opens to merchant ships as announced, hundreds of foreign seafarers trapped in Odessa will also be released. Mizintsev said that about 70 ships are expected to exit by the safe corridor.
On the other hand, according to the International Chamber of Shipping, it was stated that at least one of the vessels stuck in Ukraine is down to several days’ worth of food, and resupply options are limited.
It was also announced that more than 20 Turkish-owned ships and a total of more than 250 Turkish crews were stranded in Ukraine.
