Reusing onboard waste heat

Orcan Energy has launched a new system to convert onboard waste heat into electrical energy, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The efficiency PACK M 150.200 comprises Orcan’s ORC modules which are specially designed for the marine market. Use of the system can help operators improve their EEDI, EEXI and CII values.

“Thanks to the widely tested and improved technology, our efficiency PACKs are reliable and flexible in their use,” said says Dr Andreas Sichert, chief executive of Orcan Energy. “They help ship owners save fuel, improve energy efficiency indices and significantly reduce their vessel’s CO2 emissions.

“The new solution will make a crucial contribution when it comes to the industry’s common goal of becoming CO2 neutral.”

The efficiency PACK M 150.200 is a space-saving, flexible solution that can generate power from a wide variety of onboard heat sources. These include exhaust gas waste heat, which accounts for 30% of the energy from burnt fuel, steam or thermal oil, but also liquid sources with lower temperatures, such as engine cooling water.

The heat absorption of pack is 2.1 MW, which is twice as much as the previous eP M 50.100. Similarly, the net electrical power generated is also about twice as high as before, at up to 200 kW.

The solution is said to be of particular benefit to large seagoing vessels and several models can be used in a ‘stack configuration’, generating up to 1 MW of net electrical output from residual heat.

Orcan Energy is teaming up with Alfa Laval to commercialise the new solution, with the latter marketing and servicing Orcan’s new ORC solutions under its own E-PowerPack name.
