According to reports from local Iranian news media, on July 16 local time, Iranian officials seized a foreign oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, confiscating over 2 million liters of suspected smuggled fuel.

The chief judge of Hormozgan Province highlighted this smuggling incident on July 16.

A spokesperson for Iran’s judiciary stated that the seizure was carried out after authorities noticed the tanker lacked proper documentation for its cargo.

Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the vessel was indeed transporting a large quantity of illegal fuel. As a result, the ship and its crew—17 individuals, including the captain—were detained by Iranian authorities and are now facing legal proceedings in Jask County.

Reuters reported that no further details about the tanker’s name or flag of registration have been disclosed.

Iran’s chief justice mentioned that efforts are underway to gather evidence regarding the exact quantity of fuel onboard. This includes laboratory tests and verification of relevant documents to determine the nature and legality of the cargo.

Iranian state media stated that updates on the investigation will be released once all verification procedures are completed.

Due to government subsidies and currency devaluation, Iran has some of the lowest fuel prices globally. Unfortunately, this has also fueled rampant fuel smuggling.

Smugglers often attempt to illegally transport fuel across land borders to neighboring countries or via maritime routes to Gulf Arab states.

Iranian officials have made it clear that those caught smuggling fuel—especially in collaboration with foreign entities—will face severe penalties if convicted.

In March 2025 alone, Iranian authorities intercepted two vessels carrying approximately 3 million liters of diesel, arresting 25 crew members.

In subsequent operations, three more ships were seized in April, and another tanker was detained in June.

Earlier this year, two captains and four crew members were each sentenced to five years in prison for involvement in similar fuel smuggling activities.

Additionally, earlier this year, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized two Tanzanian-flagged tankers, the *Sea Ranger* and *Salama*, in Gulf waters, alleging they were transporting around 1.5 million liters of diesel. The vessels were later taken to Bushehr Port for further legal review.
