The Port of Oakland reported container volumes declined in June 2025, as shippers and carriers adapted to softening demand and ongoing tariff uncertainty.

The Port of Oakland handled 168,460 TEUs, down 10.1 per cent from May and 12.8 per cent from June 2024, when 193,158 TEUs were recorded.

Maritime Director Bryan Brandes said: “This is not a seasonal dip, but a market recalibration. Importers and exporters are adjusting their supply chain timing and routing decisions in response to evolving conditions.”

Despite the monthly and annual declines, year-to-date container volume remains slightly higher than the same period last year, with 1.14 million TEUs passing through the port between January and June 2025, a 0.6 per cent increase compared to 2024.

Loaded imports totalled 70,334 TEUs in June 2025, an 11.3 per cent decrease from May and a 16.3 per cent drop from June 2024.

According to the Port of Oakland, the figures reflect how importers are responding to shifting trade policy and moderating consumer demand in the US market.

Loaded exports were 59,593 TEUs, down 11.5 per cent from May and 10.3 per cent from June 2024, also reflecting global market weakness and softer demand for US exports.

Empty imports rose 0.6 per cent, with 10,400 TEUs handled in June versus 10,337 TEUs in June 2024.

Empty exports fell 13.1 per cent, at 28,133 TEUs compared to 32,356 TEUs a year earlier.

Vessel calls also dropped to 77 in June, down from 87 in May and 86 in June 2024. However, average TEUs per vessel increased by 1.6 per cent from May, as carriers consolidated cargo across fewer sailings.
