Hyundai Rotem has announced a new contract to supply 57 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and associated control systems, chargers, and ancillary equipment for Dongwon Global Terminal Busan at Pusan New Port, Pier 7.

The company received a letter of intent (LOI) for the project, with full contracts to follow.

Port AGVs are a core component of smart logistics automation, transporting containers autonomously from quayside to storage yards with no manual intervention. Their deployment is viewed as a critical step towards further digitisation and automation of port operations.

Hyundai Rotem is already a key supplier in this sector; in 2023, it delivered 43 AGVs to Dongwon Global Terminal at the same berth.

The company also secured a 44-AGV order for Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (YGPA) in 2024.

A Hyundai Rotem representative said: “To target the global port logistics automation market, we will concentrate our capabilities on research and development (R&D) to maximise container throughput per hour and further systematise the maintenance sector.”

The new AGVs are expected to boost efficiency at Pusan New Port, which is recognised as a leading smart logistics hub in Northeast Asia and a central node for the development of Arctic shipping routes.

The port’s continued investment in automation aims to increase competitiveness and respond to growing demands for faster, more reliable, and more sustainable container handling.
