With a capacity of 17,480 TEU, the Berlin Maersk is the largest methanol-powered dual-fuel container ship to date—and the first in a series of six—that the Danish shipping company is having built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

The new container ship was named during a ceremony at the shipyard today, Wednesday.

The ship will be deployed on Maersk’s AE3 route between East Asia and Northern Europe, with its first port call in Shanghai on July 7.

The ship is designed like the 12 in the Ane Maersk class. The only difference is a greater beam, allowing it to carry more containers.

“We are pleased to now begin receiving the ships in the Berlin Maersk series. Since we decided in 2021 to order our first methanol-powered dual-fuel ship, much has happened—and many other shipping companies have also invested in this propulsion technology. Our new Berlin Maersk class builds on the foundation we laid with the Laura Maersk and later the Ane Maersk class. The series is a clear expression of our continued focus on innovation and optimization—and sets a new standard for efficiency in the industry,” says Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk.

All six ships in the new series will be delivered this year and will all sail under the Danish flag.
