The Greek government is sending a tugboat to the Red Sea, deployable for rescue and firefighting operations, with the aim of assisting Greek ships that may be targeted by the maritime traffic attacks repeatedly carried out by Houthi rebels in the region. This is the anchor handling tug supply vessel Giant from the fleet of the Greek company Megatugs. “In collaboration with the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association of Tugs, Salvage, Antipollution & OSVs,” explained the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, yesterday, “this state-of-the-art rescue vessel will head to the Red Sea to support, protect, and assist Greek-owned ships and Greek seafarers.”

Explaining the decision to send the tugboat to the Middle Eastern region, the president of the shipowners’ association, Paul Xiradakis, recalled the events during last summer’s attack on a Greek tanker (on August 22, 2024, and March 11, 2025): “During the rescue of the Sounion,” he emphasized, “a Greek rescue vessel departed from Piraeus to save this ship because no one else was willing to go to the region due to the dangerous situation. Now, since this situation persists and worsens, we have decided to send this rescue vessel to the area.
