The Port Authority of Las Palmas has put out to tender the works corresponding to Phase I of the future Urban Park of the ‘Puerto de Las Palmas’, which will be located on Avenida de los Consignatarios in the middle of the La Isleta isthmus. This first phase will include inclusive play areas, sports spaces, and rest areas. The project also includes the installation of efficient lighting, urban furniture, irrigation and drainage systems, as well as new pedestrian connections that will improve the park’s integration with its surroundings. The goal is to provide a space that fosters community coexistence and contact with nature.

The president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas explained that the current park design differs from the one previously presented by the former president, Luis Ibarra, because that project included burying the access road from Plaza de Canarias to the southern entrance of the port—an action that technicians deemed unfeasible. This avenue is one of the two main exits for port traffic, along with Belén María, so its complete closure would jeopardize operations in case of an emergency.

“The port is executing the works corresponding to the first phase, but there is no intention to abandon the development of the complete park, which will be carried out once the City Council relocates the Red Cross and PMA warehouses. The entire area from Plaza de Canarias, the El Muelle shopping center, Poema del Mar Aquarium, Red Cross, and PMA will form part of the city’s great green lung,” admitted Beatriz Calzada. The president of Las Palmas added, “Being able to execute the park under the initially planned conditions depends on removing the Red Cross and PMA warehouses; otherwise, we will be left with only a fraction of the park,” said Calzada.
