Must read

The general cargo vessel MN KOSTAS, flying the flag of Sierra Leone, remains under continuous surveillance after having partially sunk with its bow protruding above the surface in the Kyriamadi area of Sitia in Crete, Greece, where it had run aground on July 24, 2025.

According to the local authorities, for navigational safety reasons, the tugboat Aegean Pelagos remains permanently at the site. The salvage operation is expected to proceed normally in the coming period, as the port authorities, following a meeting of the competent advisory committee, officially classified MN KOSTAS as a wreck, noting that due to its position and condition it poses a risk to navigation.

The removal will be carried out under the responsibility of the managing company.

Fuel and lubricants have already been pumped out, the cargo (gypsum soil) has been unloaded, and the vessel’s ventilation and distribution points have been sealed.

During the operations, which involved tugboats, salvage vessels, floating cranes, and a cargo ship, a floating barrier was deployed and anti-pollution equipment was kept on standby, with no marine pollution observed.
