Ultratug scales up Mexican fleet

A South American tug owner is preparing to welcome its latest newbuilding to a key port on Mexico’s Pacific coast

Turkey-based Sanmar Shipyards is building a Bogacay-series harbour tugfor South American owner Ultratug, to support large ships visiting Lazaro Cardenas Port on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

This tug, currently named Bogacay LXXIX, is being constructed to a Robert Allan Ltd RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design with an astern bollard pull of 75 tonnes, two Caterpillar manufactured Cat 3516E main engines, each producing 2,200 kW at 1,600 rpm connected to a Caterpillar’s SCRexhaust aftertreatment system for removing NOx to comply with IMO Tier III emissions standards.

It has a moulded beam of 12 m, a moulded depth of around 5 m, a navigational draught of about 6 m, a free running speed of around 12 knots andaccommodation for eight crew members, in two single-berth cabins in the deckhouse and three double cabins below deck.

“The launching of this tugboat marks a key milestone in our growing relationship with Ultratug,” said Sanmar Shipyardscommercial director Rüçhan Civgin. “We have worked closely with their team to ensure the vessel is precisely aligned with the requirements at Lazaro Cardenas.”

Ultratug ordered this new harbour tug from Sanmar for its Mexican operations in January 2025, to be deployed at Lazaro Cardenas Port to service container ships using Mexico’s biggest terminal.

Sanmar is also building a Bogacay tugboat with similar particulars for Ultratug Colombia. This tugboat will also have a Caterpillar SCR for IMO Tier III compliance and a FiFi1 off-ship fire-fighting system to support emergency response.
