Oman to Launch Pioneering Green Ship Recycling Facility
According to a recent publication by Fast Company Middle East, Oman is set to establish the first fully integrated green ship recycling facility in the Middle East. This initiative aims to support the nation’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 while promoting sustainable practices within the shipping industry.

The facility will be situated in Khatmat Malaha, North Batinah, and is being developed through a collaboration between Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) and Green Wheel Recycling Middle East. Officials anticipate that a concession agreement will be finalized this month, paving the way for immediate construction.

Once operational, this state-of-the-art facility will have the capability to dismantle over 70 ships annually. In its initial phase alone, it is projected to generate approximately 2 million tonnes of high-quality low-carbon steel each year. This output will significantly benefit Oman’s iron and steel sectors while contributing positively to non-oil GDP growth and fostering a circular economy.

The concept of green ship recycling emphasizes environmentally responsible dismantling processes that adhere strictly to regulations designed for environmental protection and human health safety. This stands in stark contrast with conventional shipbreaking methods that often entail considerable risks.

This project also aligns with international standards for safe ship recycling practices such as those outlined in the EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong Convention—benefiting shipping companies striving for compliance with these guidelines.

Furthermore, officials estimate that around 2,000 jobs will be created as a result of this initiative along with opportunities for related industries like eco-friendly container manufacturing.

In addition to this groundbreaking facility, Oman plans on becoming the first Gulf nation capable of supplying docked vessels with electricity and green fuel—an effort aimed at minimizing emissions from idling ships while enhancing overall port sustainability.

The establishment of this facility not only positions Oman as a frontrunner in innovative maritime solutions but also plays an essential role in fulfilling its climate objectives.
