According to a recent publication by the Panama Canal Authority, the canal has introduced an exciting new feature called the NetZero Slot within its transit reservation framework. This initiative aims to foster decarbonization in maritime transport and aligns with the canal’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The inaugural competition for this exclusive slot is set for October 3, 2025, targeting vessels transiting during the week of November 2–8, 2025. Starting on that date, one slot will be dedicated each week solely for ships that meet specific low-emission standards.
This initial rollout requires participating vessels to be dual-fuel capable and able to run on at least one fuel type with a carbon intensity factor not exceeding 75 gCO₂e/MJ. Acceptable fuels include green methanol, green ammonia, bio-LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), or bio-LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). While immediate use isn’t mandatory, investments in these technologies will be acknowledged as supply chains develop.
The allocation process for the NetZero Slot won’t involve auctions; instead, it will follow a prioritization system based on:
This initiative underscores the Panama Canal’s commitment as a key player in facilitating global energy transitions while providing tangible incentives for clients eager to adopt alternative fuels and low-carbon technologies. Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer at the canal stated: “The introduction of the NetZero Slot clearly demonstrates our dedication to sustainability while enhancing global trade competitiveness. We are here to assist our customers in moving towards an eco-friendly future.”
