According to a recent publication by Navantia, Spain marked a significant achievement on September 11 with the unveiling of the F-111 Bonifaz, the inaugural vessel in its new F-110 frigate series at the Ferrol Shipyard located in Galicia.

The launch event was graced by Her Majesty Queen Sofía and featured prominent figures from both political and military spheres. Notable attendees included Spain’s Prime Minister, Alfonso Rueda (President of the Xunta de Galicia), Pedro Blanco (Government Delegate in Galicia), and José Manuel Rey (Mayor of Ferrol).

High-ranking military personnel were also present, such as Admiral Teodoro López Calderón, Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD), alongside Ricardo Domínguez, president of Navantia.

The F-111 Bonifaz signifies a leap forward for Spanish naval capabilities with its cutting-edge anti-submarine and anti-air warfare systems. Its tall mast is equipped with an advanced radar system that underscores its technological sophistication.

This new class builds upon the legacy of the successful F100 design previously marketed internationally—including proposals to enhance U.S. Navy’s future frigate programs like Constellation class.

Currently over 70% complete, this 6,000-ton vessel is being outfitted for delivery to the Spanish Navy anticipated in 2028. The ship’s design emphasizes automation while allowing for future upgrades to maintain operational relevance.

The Bonifaz is just one part of a five-frigate order aimed at replacing six aging vessels from the F80 Santa María class—originally derived from U.S. designs dating back to the 1980s.

Construction continues on three additional ships within this new series at Ferrol; hull blocks for F-112 are already positioned on-site following its keel-laying earlier this year in April 2025. Meanwhile, work progresses on both remaining blocks for F-112 and all nine blocks designated for F-113 within their workshops.
