Port of Iquique receives arrival of new factory ship

Must read

The Port of Iquique received the arrival of the factory ship Margiris. The operation, according to the state-owned company, not only represents a high volume of cargo transfer with more than 5 thousand tons of product.

The operation involves the use of 175 refrigerated containers, which implies a logistical deployment that will extend for at least nine to ten work shifts.

The Margiris vessel, built in 1997, is the second largest fishing vessel in the world. It has a length of 140 meters and currently sails under the flag of Lithuania.

From Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI) they emphasized that “every time a factory ship of this magnitude is received, a logistical chain is immediately activated that involves multiple port workers. This type of port call reinforces the strategic role of the Port of Iquique as a source of formal employment and an economic driver for the Tarapacá Region.”

The cargo from the Margiris —mainly composed of processed and frozen fish, specifically jack mackerel and mackerel, caught in international waters— will be consolidated into containers and exported to Africa, reaffirming the export vocation and international connectivity of the maritime facility.

To achieve this port call, Maersk managed and made possible the confirmation of the vessel’s arrival.
