Grenaa Havn has been chosen to play a key role in the green transition, as Normod Carbon establishes a CO2 interim storage facility with a total capacity of up to 10 million tons per year. The investment amounts to around 250 million euros and will be realized in two phases with planned operation from 2029.

The project is part of Normod Carbon’s strategy to build Northern Europe’s largest network of CO₂ hubs with a total capacity of more than 20 million tons annually. The purpose is to support the decarbonization of the most challenging industries by collecting, storing, and later transporting CO2 to dedicated offshore and onshore reservoirs.

“Grenaa has the deep-water access, industrial zoning, and scalability that the CCUS industry needs,” says Jan Lien, CEO of Normod Carbon according to a post on Linkedin.

According to the company, interim storage of CO2 can reduce total transport and storage costs by over 25 percent, making it more realistic for more capture projects to reach final investment decisions.

“Our agreement allows emitters to share a cost-effective infrastructure instead of building expensive standalone solutions – thereby accelerating the rollout of CO₂ capture across the region,” adds Jan Lien.

With the CO2 hub in place, Grenaa Havn is taking a significant step into the future energy infrastructure while simultaneously strengthening its position as a central hub in the development of green, maritime solutions.
