Greenpeace Activists Block Russian and US LNG Shipments to Zeebrugge Terminal

Must read

Greenpeace activists staged a blockade at the LNG import terminal in Zeebrugge, Belgium, on 1st October. The blockade was targeted against LNG being imported from Russia as well as the United States.

During the protest, around 70 people from 17 different countries took to the water in kayaks and small craft, blocking the vessels from entering the terminal. The protesters managed to temporarily halt entry into the terminal before being removed. Images from the scene show inflatable mock-ups resembling U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the Greenpeace report, between 2022 and June 2025, France, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands spent €34.3 billion on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), significantly more than the €21.2 billion they provided in bilateral aid to Ukraine during the same period.

Greenpeace Belgium is urging the EU and national governments to include a ban on Russian LNG in the bloc’s 19th sanctions package, with the goal of ending imports entirely.

The European Union has proposed a regulation in June of this year that seeks to end Russian LNG imports by 2027. The regulation is still to be decided upon by the Parliament and the Council.
