As the national responsible museum of seafaring, Forum Marinum is organizing a memorial seminar on Saturday, October 25th, featuring speakers who are experts in the history of the ship and the events.
In October 1925, the torpedo boats S 1 and S 2 and the gunboats Klas Horn and Hämeenmaa were en route from Kustavi’s Lypertö to Vaasa when they were caught by a powerful autumn storm. While the other ships managed to reach safe harbors with difficulty, S 2 could not reach its destination, Mäntyluoto in Pori, and sank in the storm off Reposaari. The Navy’s autumn cruise came to a fatal end when the entire 53-member crew of the ship perished.
The sinking received significant attention at the time and sparked much discussion. Nowadays, this tragedy is less known, and the matter is remembered mainly within the Navy circles and locally in Pori. As this year marks the centennial anniversary of the sinking, a larger-than-usual memorial ceremony will be held in Reposaari.
The ship’s wreck was raised in 1926, and a few parts have been preserved, such as the ship’s steam engine, which is on display in the main exhibition of Forum Marinum.
