ABB has signed a term sheet agreement with SwitcH2 to engineer and supply automation and electrification systems for a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel dedicated to producing green ammonia, ABB said in a statement. The FPSO will be stationed off the coast of Portugal and powered by certified renewable electricity under Power Purchase Agreements.

The facility will include a 300 MW electrolyzer capable of producing up to 243,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. Under the agreement, ABB plans to deliver a prefabricated eHouse, electrical distribution systems, and the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® Integrated Control and Safety System with full cybersecurity integration.

These modular systems are intended to support safe and efficient offshore operations and integrate with third-party equipment such as electrolyzers and ammonia synthesis units.

“This collaboration represents a key step in advancing offshore production capabilities for next-generation marine fuels,” said Saskia Kunst, CEO of SwitcH2.

The FPSO will use treated seawater for electrolysis to generate hydrogen, which will then be combined with nitrogen extracted from the air to produce green ammonia.

The ammonia will be condensed, stored onboard, and transferred to carrier ships for transport to ports, where it can serve as a marine fuel or be converted back into hydrogen for industrial use.

Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB’s Energy Industries division, stated that ABB’s technologies will enable the project to run more efficiently and contribute to decarbonizing marine transport.

Front-end engineering and design work is planned to continue until summer 2026, with a Final Investment Decision expected by the third quarter of that year. Detailed engineering and construction are scheduled to begin in 2027.
