Colombia celebrated a historic step in the internationalization process of its poultry industry, after, for the first time, a container of Colombian chicken meat reached the Japanese market, which has been received by the sanitary authorities of that country.

The South American nation obtained sanitary admissibility to Japanese territory since 2015 and today, it manages to materialize the shipments, which represented a great challenge, both for the public sector and the private sector.

It is worth mentioning that in 2015 the Japanese authorities considered that the applicable Colombian sanitary standards were equivalent to the Japanese standards, which led to the agreement on a sanitary certificate for export and a protocol through which the sanitary requirements to be met by Colombia were established.

“This is a resounding endorsement of the way we produce quality proteins in Colombia: with rigor, commitment and responsibility. Entry into the Japanese market is a clear signal of confidence in our production system and opens new opportunities for Colombian poultry farming,” said the president of the Federación Nacional de Avicultores (Fenavi), Gonzalo Moreno.

Japan, the sixth largest importer of chicken meat in the world, recorded imports of 1.142 million tons in 2024. With this first shipment, Colombia opens a door to new opportunities.
