The Port of Klaipeda is finalizing its first dock electrification project. A shore power plant has already been installed at the Port Authority Fleet Base, which will be tested at the end of the year, to supply electricity to the new hydrogen and electric-powered waste collection vessel, which will arrive at the terminal at the end of 2025.

“The Port of Klaipeda is firmly committed to the environment. We invest in sustainable and modern solutions to maintain our competitiveness. At the end of this year, the first clean-fuel vessel will arrive, and our new loading equipment at the Fleet Base will be ready to service it. This is just the beginning: by 2030, berthed vessels will have to switch off their engines and use shore power, and we are preparing to meet that demand,” detailed Algis Latakas, General Manager of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.

The Port Authority is directly funding this project, with a total cost of nearly USD 700 thousand, VAT included. The shore power plant at the Fleet Base dock was installed by Elektrifikacijos Paslaugos under a contract signed at the end of last year.

More shore power plants are planned for the Port of Klaipeda. Firstly, ro-ro vessels will be able to switch off their engines at the berth to reduce CO2 emissions; by 2026, four more plants will be installed and in the following years, similar plants will be installed for cruise ships and container carriers.
