The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, announced that Bollinger Shipyards, in collaboration with Rauma Marine Constructions (Rauma), Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) and Aker Arctic Technology Inc. (Aker Arctic), was selected for the design and construction of Arctic Security Cutters (ASC) icebreakers.
The team led by Bollinger will leverage the consolidated and production-ready design of the multipurpose icebreaker (MPI), developed by Seaspan and Aker Arctic for allied missions in extreme polar environments.
“Today’s award is a testament to President Trump’s leadership and his historic investment in America’s maritime industrial base,” said Ben Bordelon, president and CEO of Bollinger Shipyards.
“We appreciate the trust that President Trump has placed in the skilled men and women of Bollinger Shipyards and we are ready to begin construction of these crucial vessels on day one. The Arctic Security Cutter will enable the United States to rapidly project its power, enforce its sovereignty, and reaffirm its dominance in the Arctic,” added Bordelon.
Bollinger and its partners will be responsible for the construction of six state-of-the-art icebreakers. The first three vessels will be built simultaneously by Rauma in Finland and Bollinger in the United States, while the production of the remaining three will be carried out in the United States. Delivery of the first three ships is expected within 36 months of the contract award.
“At Seaspan, we are extremely proud to work closely with our American and Finnish partners, Bollinger, Aker and Rauma, to provide the U.S. Coast Guard with a state-of-the-art icebreaker, ready to operate in extreme ice conditions, which will enhance Arctic security,” said John McCarthy, CEO of Seaspan Shipyards.
