What are the basic stages for cleaning holds in bulk carriers?

Hold cleaning is a critical stage for the safe and efficient operation of bulk carriers, which, due to their operational flexibility, can carry different cargoes from voyage to voyage. The process of hold cleaning requires careful preparation, the use of appropriate means, and strict adherence to safety regulations.

Before starting the cleaning, the master must conduct a thorough risk assessment, taking into account the use of cleaning chemicals. For their part, the crew members who will participate in the hold cleaning operations must be equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment.

Cleaning Procedure

First, the hold drainage channels must be cleaned of cargo residue and dust. At this stage, the use of hot or warm water is recommended, while the use of compressed air should be avoided.

Traditional hold cleaning with water is performed from top to bottom. However, when chemicals are used, the manufacturer’s instructions must be followed, which may specify a reverse order. It is worth noting that cleaning chemicals must be compatible with the hold coating and with the next cargo.

The cleaning sequence is usually as follows: Hold hatches – Underdeck surfaces – Side frames – Upper and lower hoppers – Side walls – Tank top – Bilges.

Before the cleaning process is completed, a final rinse with fresh water is required to remove chloride salts. Remember that residues of seawater can lead to a failed cleanliness inspection, damage to subsequent cargoes, or corrosion of the coating.

Finally, after cleaning, the holds and drainage channels must be completely dry before loading the next cargo. If weather permits, opening the hold hatches accelerates this process.
