The world’s first ship tunnel is abandoned

The Norwegian government has now removed the planned ship tunnel at Stad from its budget proposal. With an expected cost of almost 10 billion Norwegian kroner, the tunnel is too expensive, even for the affluent Norwegians.

“We have to prioritize – use every single krone as sensibly as possible,” says Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

“Therefore, we are now saying no to the project. We cannot justify spending so much money on it”.

The Norwegian government nodded yes to the project in 2021, which at that time was costed at 2.8 billion Norwegian kroner.

Later, the estimated price for the 1.8 kilometer long tunnel began to rise significantly, now ending at 9.8 billion Norwegian kroner – almost double what the government had expected.
