Peru could exceed USD 100 billion in exports to the world by 2031, if it maintains economic stability and consolidates its trade policy, estimated Luis Torres, former president of the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (Promperú).

“The country amazes, despite its political and economic turbulence and citizen insecurity. Its economic resilience and entrepreneurial muscle continue to attract the interest of foreign investors. Proof of this is that, according to the BBC, Peru, Mexico and Brazil were the countries that attracted the most investment in 2024,” the specialist stated.

Torres highlighted that Peru has become a key player in maritime and port trade from Latin America to Asia, above economies like Mexico and Chile.

“If nothing dramatic happens with next year’s elections, by 2031 we should export more than USD 100,000 million to the world,” stated the former head of Promperú.

The former president of the organization specified that more than 70% of that projection would be composed of mining exports, although he warned that the challenge will be to transform that strength into an opportunity for comprehensive development.

“With a shared value strategy and articulation with education, health and connectivity policies, we will be able to build tourist and productive clusters that last when the mineral runs out,” he stated.

Torres added that these conditions will allow for the generation of decent employment, with new trades and professions, in a decentralized and sustainable scheme.

The specialist also considered that the formalization of illegal mining would be key to broadening the tax base. “These new companies would contribute taxes that will allow for the creation of more and better schools, hospitals, strengthen connectivity and the National Police, in addition to training leaders with a vocation for service,” he pointed out.
