The ship named Kafkametler sank on November 19, 2023, after hitting the military breakwater due to a severe storm in the Karadeniz Ereğli district of Zonguldak.
While the lifeless bodies of 5 crew members of the Kafkametler were reached, 7 crew members could not be found.
A monument was erected on the Karadeniz Ereğli coast in memory of the 12 sailors who lost their lives in the disaster.
The monument features the names, birthplaces, and duties of the crew members who lost their lives. The inscription on the monument reads, “This monument was built in memory of the 12 sailors who lost their lives on the Turkish-flagged dry cargo ship named Kafkametler, which sank in the hurricane that occurred in our district on November 19, 2023, and was called the disaster of the century.”
The names of the sailors on the monument are listed as follows: Cemal Turan, Hıfzı Tarhan, Berke Çamurtaş, Veli Özel, Göksel Özel, Tamer Özer, İsmail Kaptan, Satılmış Uslu, Mustafa Nacar, Cüneyt Aygen, Ömer Hebip and Metin Usta.
