Svitzer partners with Cochin Shipyard to build electric tugs in India

Must read

Svitzer has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Cochin Sipyard Limited (CSL) to jointly develop and build a new generation of electric tugs in India. The agreement, inked during India Maritime Week in Mumbai, sets the stage for production at CSL’s facilities and marks a significant milestone in Svitzer’s “Make in India” initiative.

The project will focus on constructing electric versions of Svitzer’s innovative TRAnsverse tugs, designed to bolster the company’s global fleet renewal while advancing India’s green port and towage ambitions.

The partnership aligns with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, both of which emphasize sustainable shipbuilding and port operations. It also builds on growing private sector commitments to India’s maritime green transition — including over $7 billion in recent investments from global players such as DP World and APM Terminals.
