Tankersoperatedby two companies within the Stena group will be retrofitted with new communications technologies to enhance crew welfare

Northern Marine Management (NMM) has started installing hardware connected to a bonded satellite communications service on tankers operated by Stena Bulk and Proman Stena Bulk.

Inmarsat Maritime’s NexusWave is being deployed to enhance crew connectivity and operational communications, with communications provided via the geostationary orbiting satellites of Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-band network and Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbiting constellation.

NMM is upgrading communications on the tankers to continue improving crew welfare through enhanced connectivity as it recognises the growing importance of high-speed internet access in attracting and retaining seafarers, while supporting the operational performance of ships it manages.

“We continue to explore and implement a range of connectivity solutions across our entire managed fleet, with NexusWave forming a key part of the strategy for selected vessels,” said Northern Marine Group director for ship management, John Cook.

“High-quality onboard connectivity has long been part of our approach to supporting crew welfare, recruitment and retention. As expectations evolve, so too must our solutions.”
