The ship’s design has been optimized to maximize cargo capacity compared to previous E-Flexer generations
Gothenburg – Stena Line has commissioned the new generation ro-ro ship Stena Futura, the latest addition to the fleet operating on the Irish Sea routes. The unit, built to E-Flexer series specifications, features a plug-in hybrid propulsion system, equipped with state-of-the-art engines. The design includes the capability to operate using liquefied natural gas (LNG), although this mode has not yet been activated. The core of its efficiency lies in the battery system, which allows for zero-emission navigation during port entry and exit maneuvers, reducing the environmental impact in coastal and port areas.
The ship’s design has been optimized to maximize cargo capacity compared to previous E-Flexer generations. The Stena Futura has a length of 214.5 meters and a draft of 6.4 meters, with a total capacity of 3,100 linear meters for vehicles and rolling cargo, plus 120 cabins for passengers. Its nominal cruising speed is 21 knots. The unit is intended to strengthen connectivity between British and Irish ports, confirming the company’s orientation towards cleaner energy solutions in the ro-ro sector.
