GENEVA – The MSC Group and the MSC Foundation have launched an initial series of urgent relief efforts to support the Jamaican Government’s humanitarian response for the communities affected by the devastating passage of Hurricane Melissa on October 28.
With the operational support of MSC Cruises, the cruise ship MSC Divina transported 12.7 thousand liters of bottled water and 264 waterproof tarps to Jamaica. The aid arrived in Ocho Rios on November 11 to meet the immediate needs identified by relief agencies, ensuring safe drinking water and materials for setting up shelters.
The MSC Foundation, with the support of MSC, has also committed to ensuring the sea transport of 12 containers of aid from the United States and has made 14 containers available to support the local NGOs involved in the relief efforts — Food For The Poor and RG Cares Foundation — in the distribution and storage of aid. Other initiatives to support the national relief response are also being defined.
Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Cruises and chairman of the Executive Committee of the MSC Foundation, commented: “We are fully committed to supporting the people of Jamaica in coping with the consequences of the devastating Hurricane Melissa. In collaboration with our local partners, we are coordinating the delivery of essential resources to bring relief to the affected communities and ensure vital aid reaches those most in need.”
