On November 17, the unveiling ceremony of the Hong Kong Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association Limited was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Leung Chun-ying, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region John Lee Ka-chiu, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R. Zhou Ji, Vice Minister of Transport Fu Xuyin, Chairman of China Merchants Group Miao Jianmin, and Chairman of the China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association Xu Lirong attended the ceremony and witnessed the unveiling. Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong SAR Government Chen Meibao and General Manager of the China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association Song Chunfeng jointly unveiled the plaque for the Hong Kong Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association Limited. The unveiling ceremony served as one of the key segments of the opening ceremony for the “2025 Hong Kong Maritime Week” and the “2025 World Maritime Merchants Conference”.
In his speech, Chairman Xu Lirong stated that the establishment of the Hong Kong Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association Limited marks the further integration of China’s shipowners mutual assurance endeavors with international standards. The Hong Kong Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association Limited will fully leverage Hong Kong’s status as an international trade, shipping, and financial center, deeply integrate into the Hong Kong marine insurance market, and provide shipowners with one-stop insurance services covering various types, including Protection & Indemnity insurance. It will vigorously promote the integration and linkage of the Hong Kong and mainland marine insurance markets, fully stimulate the vitality of the Hong Kong marine insurance market, and continuously tap the potential for cooperation in marine insurance between the two places. It will be based in Hong Kong to consistently drive the coordinated development of the entire shipping industry chain, using a global perspective and innovative thinking to build consensus within the industry and empower its transformation and upgrading.
As China’s only and Asia’s largest international P&I Club, the China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association, in line with the needs of national development strategies, reached a cooperation consensus with the Hong Kong SAR Government on the establishment of a local shipowners mutual insurance institution in Hong Kong. With the guidance and support of the Ministry of Transport, the Hong Kong SAR Government, and the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association initiated the establishment of the Hong Kong Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association Limited, viewing this move as an important strategic support to enhance underwriting capacity and global service levels, and to promote high-quality and sustainable development of the industry.
