Yet another strange story unfolded a few days ago, when the captain of a cargo ship decided to leave the port hastily to avoid paying a heavy fee from the ship’s grounding.
According to reports, the 190-meter long, 57,001 dwt capacity bulk carrier Jacob H, ran aground in the Gulf of Gabon during the ship’s loading.
The cargo ship was loading a cargo of 52,000 tons of manganese when it ran aground on the bottom. The ship requested help from a salvage company, which assisted in refloating the ship. There were no reports of injuries, damage, or marine pollution.
Subsequently, the salvage company presented the captain with a “mammoth” bill, which the shipowning company considered extortionate.
And here begins this incredible story.
According to media, the cargo ship Jacob departed illegally from the port, on the night of November 6th, without paying money to the salvage company nor to the pilot. Also, the captain violated the port’s safety rules which oblige ships to navigate within the port limits with the assistance of a pilot.
The details of the incident are not yet clear, as the Jacob H stated it had all the necessary documents to depart from the port.
Be that as it may, this very strange case is under investigation.
