Recognition for the work in risk prevention and the quality of work plans in the matter was received this week by Puerto Columbo, being highlighted with the Distinction of Merit among companies in the Valparaíso Region, at the “Regional Annual Distinctions” event organized by the Instituto de Seguridad del Trabajo (IST).
The company obtained the “Excellence in Prevention” award, within the framework of the Zonal Distinctions in Prevention that the IST has been awarding annually since 2001. The award’s objective is to incentivize those companies, joint committees, and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution in preventive work, as well as having contributed to increasing their companies’ competitiveness.
The award was confirmed through a letter sent to the extraportuary by the IST Central Zone, stating that “prevention and the good results in occupational safety are the result of the work of a committed and responsible team.”
The company’s general manager, Rodrigo Mancilla, expressed his satisfaction with the recognition and highlighted the support for his management by the company’s board of directors, stating regarding this that “this achievement was also possible thanks to the social commitment that the organization has towards its workers and clients.”
The executive also indicated that “we are working on an integrated management system with the IST, in the storage of sodium cyanide and we obtained the certification in the international code which are achievements that add to the preventive management, in addition to working with Senda being validated for standing out in the effort and commitment of the organization to improve the quality of life of its workers and a preventive culture of drug and alcohol consumption.”
For her part, the Risk Prevention Engineer of Puerto Columbo, Pamela Bobadilla, described the distinction as “very relevant and gratifying,” stating that it is due “to an effort by the entire work team that makes up our organization.
The relevance of this award is not only for the company, but it is a commitment from ourselves to achieve an accident rate of 0%, for which this recognition at the level of the V region, is an important incentive to continue working on the strategic objective that aims towards the well-being of our workers and contractors.
When referring to the guidelines that led the company to obtain this achievement, Bobadilla explained that “we are committed to ensuring that all activities that are carried out daily are conducted within a framework of prevention, which is supported by a program based on the occupational safety, hygiene and health system that is currently being worked on in conjunction with the IST”.
The professional also indicated that the objective aims to “comply with the highest standards that apply to companies in our industry”, which in turn “ensure the health and physical integrity of our personnel, in addition to all those who have any work relationship with us; the facilities and process equipment; as well as the health and safety of the community neighboring our facilities”.
Bobadilla detailed that, in the logistics company, a wide variety of activities are carried out, such as: storage of standard and refrigerated containers; fertilizers, consolidation operations, deconsolidation and others; each of them with their specific characteristics, which are directly aimed at the port operations required by our clients.
The engineer also pointed out that “occupation in the sector has been increasing, largely due to its own evolution and the increase in demand, a situation that increasingly demands specialized personnel, a large proportion of technicians, in addition to properly qualified workers”.
“It is interesting to remember that risk is present in the activities of most organizations. Therefore, it is important to train and inform all our internal and external workers who work or provide services with our company, in order to achieve quality production standards under the control of our risks. Hence, the participation of all levels of the organization contributes and will contribute to improving risk management,” concluded Bobadilla.
