Shipowner Costamare has placed a final order for eight container ships ranging between 13,000 and 15,000 teu and unveiled the purchase of seven dry bulkers.
Costamare has purchased seven dry bulkers and placed a final order for eight container ships of between 13,000 and 15,000 teu.
The shipowner has in part placed an order for two new container ships of 13,000 teu each, which are to be built at an undisclosed Asian shipyard, and partly exercised options for a total of six ships, two of them 13,000 teu and four of them 15,000 teu.
The new container vessels have already been placed on “long term charters […] with a leading liner company”, writes Costamare in a press release.
In it, Costamare further reports to have bought seven dry bulkers without disclosing the purchase price.
Earlier this year, the shipowner announced its entry into the dry bulk market. According to Chief Financial Officer Gregory Zikos, the recent purchases bring the number of dry bulkers to 44.
“[…] executing on our decision to invest in a liquid sector where supply is limited by a low orderbook and demand is being driven by increased infrastructure spending and commodity consumption,” the CFO says in the press release.
In addition to the 44 dry bulkers, Costamare’s fleet consists of 79 container ships. The number includes a ship that the company has agreed to acquire as well as two newbuilds, according to the press release.
