Simulator-based Azipod propulsion training is now available at a new facility in Rotterdam thanks to a collaboration between ABB and maritime training provider Simwave. ABB’s Azipod propulsion system improves efficiency and manoeuvrability in the cruise industry, but requires thorough training.

Hands-on simulation and instruction

Simwave’s Centre of Excellence in Rotterdam is the fourth location where Azipod training is offered, alongside ABB facilities in Helsinki and Turku (Finland) and Hamburg (Germany). Equipped with the latest and most advanced simulation technology, the centre enables captains and bridge officers to gain practical experience with Azipod operations and acquire in-depth knowledge to ensure optimum safety and efficiency.

A total of four courses are available at Simwave’s facility. These programmes cover twin and triple Azipod unit operations at operational and management levels. They are designed to enhance ship-handling skills, improve operational efficiency and promote safer and more sustainable maritime operations. Future initiatives will also focus on automation and technical training for engineering departments.
