A state-of-the-art passenger boarding bridge; an expanded waiting area with increased seating capacity and restrooms; an optimized security control area to streamline the boarding process and an improved external escalator to facilitate the simultaneous flow of boarding and disembarkation on the third floor are the main upgrades announced for Flynn Cruiseport Boston.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) kicked off its most ambitious renovation project to date, preparing to welcome larger vessels and more frequent calls in the coming years. The improvements will optimize passenger flow, increase operational efficiency, and guarantee an exceptional boarding and disembarkation experience for passengers.

Flynn Cruiseport Boston is an essential resource for travelers and an economic engine for the region. Massport is also investing in critical infrastructure improvements to accommodate the structural growth of the port and offer a smoother experience for passengers.

These updates are also crucial to accommodate the larger cruise ships that are increasingly calling on the New England region.

Just last year, Massport announced a plan to install shore power connection by 2030. Almost 80% of the ships currently operating in Boston can connect to the land-based electrical grid or use an alternative low-carbon emissions technology.

When vessels use the service, they draw electricity to cover their energy needs for lighting, pumps, communications, and refrigeration, instead of using onboard diesel auxiliary engines. Infrastructure like this can prevent greenhouse gas emissions from vessels.

“Following another successful cruise season, we are pleased to begin a series of improvements to modernize and optimize the Flynn cruiseport. This investment reflects our commitment to our passengers, cruise partners, and sustainability initiatives. We look forward to welcoming the largest ship that has ever homeported here and continued growth in the future,” stated Lauren Gleason, Massport Director.
