Pilbara Ports reported that in the coming months, the installation of more than 280 steel piles that will form the base of the two new multi-user wharves will begin, continuing the development works at Lumsden Point, which are improving the export and import capabilities of the Port Hedland port.

The site will facilitate the export of battery metals and minerals and the import of renewable energy infrastructure. The civil works and land services contract has been awarded to Ertech, which will be responsible for earthworks, the construction of internal roads, road paving, and underground infrastructure throughout the project, including electrical supply, water, and communications. The project will boost direct trade with the Pilbara region, generating employment and economic opportunities.

Imports through Lumsden Point are expected to begin in mid-2026. The Australian government is investing USD 365 million in improvements to common-use ports in Pilbara, of which USD 290 million is allocated to the project, in collaboration with the Western Australian government, which is contributing USD 62.4 million.

The Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, stated that “Lumsden Point is now closer than ever to strengthening regional supply chains, boosting export capacity, and delivering lasting benefits for the local Pilbara communities. This development will benefit businesses and communities, and transform Port Hedland into a more efficient, sustainable, and diversified port. Our support is generating significant economic opportunities in the region and driving the growth of renewable energy.”

Western Australia’s Minister for Ports, Stephen Dawson, added that “The Cook Government is pleased to see the latest milestones reached at Lumsden Point, in the Port Hedland port. This progress reflects our commitment to boosting infrastructure and fostering economic growth in the Pilbara region. Lumsden Point will create hundreds of jobs, diversify our exports, and ensure Western Australia is prepared to meet global demand for critical minerals and renewable energy infrastructure.”

The State Member for Pilbara, Kevin Michel, said that “The development of Lumsden Point represents a game-changer for Port Hedland and the Pilbara region, and will ensure we remain the economic engine of the country for many years to come.”

“The start of the foundation work and the awarding of this major contract demonstrate real progress on the ground, reaffirming Pilbara Ports’ commitment to building infrastructure that supports future trade and sustainable development in the Pilbara,” Michel concluded.
