INTERTANKO announced an initiative which has been designed to support shipping professionals moving from sea to shore, while also helping employers to facilitate this transition for them.
The 25-page guide titled “Seafarers’ Initiative: Guidance for seagoing professionals moving ashore” comes to fill a significant gap in the industry’s support for seafarers who continue their careers in shore-based positions. It is particularly characteristic that many face unexpected challenges during this transition, with some returning to the seafaring profession due to a lack of awareness of all the consequences of a move ashore.
“Seafarers excel at sea for their dedication to their duties, their professionalism and their excellent training,” said Ms. Venetia Kallipolitou, Chair of INTERTANKO’s Human Element in Shipping Committee and HR & Training Manager of Tsakos Shipping and Trading S.A. “Offices need well-trained and experienced seafarers to take on superintendent duties. The guide aims to fill this gap and give it the importance required by everyone in the industry. […] Seafarers should not approach the move ashore blindly,” emphasized Ms. Kallipolitou.
